Throughout the early 1990s, sales of large personal luxury coupes were declining. At the same time, small subcompact sport coupes, mainly from Japan, were growing in popularity with younger buyers; this prompted Ford to redesign the Cougar. Of the three names that had constituted Ford's personal luxury lineup, Mark, Thunderbird, and Cougar, the Cougar returned first and was based on the Ford Contour sedan.
